Fri, June 29, - Hiking the. Buhoma Forest Trail

Bob felt well enough to have a scrambled egg, and I just had toast and tea.  We set off at 7:15 in the vans for a short drive to the Park Headquarters from where we took off by foot along an ancient road that connects two sides of a valley through the park.

Monkey eyes

We slowly birded our way, finding some of the specialties of the area.  I found it very difficult as the vegetation was quite dense (still in the Impenetrable Forest) and many birds very high in the foliage. Also it was heavily overcast and looked like rain which made the birding even more difficult. Fortunately Paul had a green laser pointer, otherwise I would have seen even fewer birds than I did.  There were several monkey species dashing through the treetops.  Bob and I were carrying small folding stools which saved us from exhaustion  The hours went slowly by and at 12:30 a staff member of the hotel hurried up with a box of picnic lunches for us.  That gave us a break to sit and relax.

Lunch Break
We continued on until around two when we turned off on a very muddy trail.  Bob and I felt quite tired - having been walking without a bathroom or snack break, except for lunch, for seven hours!!

Locals crossing the Valley

Once again Eriab saved us, and with Sandra, he walked us back to the car, along with an armed guard,  We reached the hotel by 3:30 and relaxed.

The others didn’t return until 7:15 - almost 12 hours of walking and birding

  1. I'm glad that you didn't push yourselves and go for the full 12-hr or so trek. Even still, what wonderful memories. XOX
